As reported by Hockey Canada, following a collision during a recent game at the 2014 World Junior A Challenge, Canada East forward Neil Doef was transported by ambulance with a serious injury, underwent surgery and is resting comfortably with his parents at his side. The focus is on Neil and his family, and Hockey Canada will not have further comment until more information becomes available. Hockey Canada also asks that you respect the Doef family’s right to privacy and not contact them directly at this time.

As most hockey fans are aware, Neil is well known and respected as a gifted player with the local Jr.A hockey club and earned a scholarship at the prestigious Princeton University.  He is also a talented soccer player and honour student and is, quite simply, the kind of young man that any town would be proud to call their own.  His parents, Bruce and Bobbi-Jean, are also pillars of the local community, having been highly involved as volunteers in soccer and minor hockey for many years.  They have collectively given much of their time and energy to make life better for youth in Smiths Falls and now, in return, it is time for us as a community to give something back to them.

With the permission of the Doef family, the ‘Friends of Doef ’ group has established a trust fund to assist them with any ongoing financial needs.  Donations can be made at any Scotiabank branch across Canada to the account “Doefstrong in Trust”.  Email transfers are also accepted at doefstrong@gmail.com.   An official Facebook page and Twitter have also been set up as “Doefstrong”  so please feel free to leave messages of love and support for Neil and his family.

The ‘Friends of Doef’ are also coordinating a fundraiser this coming Friday night, December 19th, at the Smiths Falls Memorial Community Centre during the next Jr. A Bears home game.  Cash donations are encouraged for this ‘Buckets of Love for Neil’ campaign which will begin prior to the game @ 6:30 pm and will continue throughout the evening.

Thanks in advance for your support and best wishes…together, we are Doefstrong!
